- The National Song Vande Mataram, composed in Sanskrit by Bankimchandra Chatterji, was a source of inspiration to the people in their struggle for freedom. It has an equal status with Jana gana – mana.
- It was sung for the first time in the 1896 session of the INC.
- It was taken from the novei ‘Anand Math’ of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee published in 1882. Its English translation was done by Sri Aurobindo.
