The Novel Indo-French Climate Satellite : Megha-Tropiques, the novel lndo-French climate satellite, was launched on October 12, 2011.

MADRAS system is a five-channel, self-calibrating, microwave radiometer system.

The Novel Indo-French Climate Satellite : Megha-Tropiques, the novel lndo-French climate satellite, was launched on October 12, 2011. PSLV C-18 took it to its required orbitory height from where it is functioning as ‘climate-eye’ for the tropics. It was put in an orbit of over 800 km from Earth’s surface and have been built to last five years. The role of the project was enlarging and it was set to join the Global Precipitation Constellation Mission (GPCM) being put up by the US and Japan. The GPCM itself had got postponed and Megha-Tropiques would give its sponsor countries a scientific edge,

MEGHA-TROPlQUES PAYLOADS

MADRAS (Microwave Analysis and Detection of Rain and Atmospheric Structures): MADRAS system is a five-channel, self-calibrating, microwave radiometer system. This radiometer is designed to estimate atmospheric water parameters in the equatorial belt.
SAPHIR: is a sounding Instrument with 6 channels sounder, which enables retrieving information in six atmospheric layers, from the Earth surface up to 12-km height. The horizontal resolution will be 10 km.
ScaRa3 (Scanner for Radiation Budget): ScaRaB is an optical scanning radiometer devoted to the measurements of radiative fluxes at the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) in the shortwave and long-wave domain.
GPS-ROS (Radio Occultation Sounder): GPS receiver to measure the vertical profile of temperature and humidity at the po:nt of radio occultation.
